FIATA HQ Meeting, logistics issues and the role of rail transport

17-03-2025

Following an invitation to attend FIATA’s HQ Meeting 2025, which takes place from 17 to 20 March 2025, the Secretary General of OTIF, Mr Aleksandr Kuzmenko, attended the meeting in Geneva, accompanied by the Head of OTIF’s Legal Department ad interim, Mr Steve Davey.

Mr Kuzmenko was invited to speak on the morning of Monday, 17 March 2025 at the first workshop following the opening ceremony. This workshop looked at the major logistical challenges of multimodal transport and Mr Kuzmenko led the discussions of Group C on the role of rail transport in international multimodal transport.

Rail transport plays an important role in international multimodal transport, especially as it is a “clean” mode of transport that is perfectly suited to the current climate challenge. Moreover, strengthening and increasing the presence of rail transport in international multimodal transport also means contributing to the flexibility and logistical efficiency of goods movements in world trade. Nevertheless, the rail sector and public policies must move towards greater interoperability and less regulatory fragmentation. In this context, Mr Kuzmenko spoke of the advantages of the Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF).

The Secretary General of OTIF warmly thanks FIATA for its invitation and for the organisation and quality of the discussions.
