The Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail (COTIF) dates from 9 May 1980.
It is the result of the merger and fundamental reform of the two original Conventions, CIV and CIM.
COTIF 1980 created an international intergovernmental organisation (IGO) with a modern character and structure.
The entry into force of COTIF 1980 on 1 May 1985 marked the beginning of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF).
